One Surface Showing Multiple Spot Areas

Looking at the image below, at first, it may appear that you need multiple surfaces; one for each area (pond).  But in Civil 3D a single surface can represent multiple spot areas by using the OUTER and SHOW boundaries.

Two practical everyday uses:

  1. E&S Grading

  2. Spot Grading along a Corridor Model (endwalls, ponds, custom daylighting, etc…)

More Efficient Label Styles

Sometimes it’s the little things. Notice this little surprise waiting for me when creating a Parcel from Objects in image 2009 earlier today. Under the label options, you can now use the generic line and curve labels for line and arc segments. This applies to alignments and other items as well. Just a nice little bonus to make your style creation and maintenance a little easier.

With this change, you can now put most of your generic labels in one place, and only use the object specific ones for things like spanning, street names, etc.

It’s always the little things.

The Art of the Span: Removing Natural Vertices using an Express Tool

One of the things that became clear during the Spanning Label posts I wrote a few weeks ago was that you needed to weed out any unnecessary natural vertices in your linework before turning them into parcels.

Sure, you can use Map Cleanup to help with this, but I rediscovered a nifty Express Tool called “Overkill” that fixes vertex problems in a snap.

Don’t do this… unless you want to break your span

Would she just SHUT UP about the span labels?  Jeez.

So James gave me a template to write, and being the big nerd that I am, instead of taking coffee breaks, I take spanning breaks.

I had been having a problem where for seemingly random reason, I would suddenly have natural vertices appear on my parcel segments where I had been so careful not to create any.

Well during my last spanning break, I figured out how I was breaking my span.
