REGEN Rules: What You Can Do About Slow Plots and Regens

I am here. You’ve missed me, eh? Well, I’ve put aside writing our two new books about the next release (an updated Mastering and a new title called Introducing), and my web training for just a few minutes to talk about something I’ve had on my mind for a long time.

The symptoms: Civil 3D had been working fine. You were modeling, building and shaping the land. Then BANG. Changing from one layout to another takes forever (such as 30 seconds or more). Regen times are slow. And plotting? Try sending a 20 sheet plan set to the plotter, go to the vending machine in the basement then back up to the 5th floor to chat up the receptionist for say, 3 hours (literally). Then your plot will appear. Or not.

Civil 3D Fundamentals: Description Keys

I really hate to do two fundamental posts back to back, but this was a request from one of my clients this morning. If I’m going to take the time to document something for one person, then I make the assumption that there may be someone else out there who would like the information as well, so I put it here. Quite honestly, it’s also a library that I create for myself as well – I can come back to one of my solutions and point it out for another customer later if needed.

So, today I am going to show a very broad overview of description keys. I’ll save any really in-depth discussion for a future post. To find out what that intimidating looking panorama is asking for, follow the link.   (note – for some reason, inline images and Windows Live Writer do not seem to agree completely with our layout…if you have your window maximized as you’re reading this, you may see some strange formatting issues.    Actually, you may see some strange formatting issues even if you don’t have a maximized window.   I apologize – I’ve spent about an hour trying to edit this to make it look acceptable.)

So you want to make styles, do you?

All of the fuss about styles creation started by James in his post…

The major issue is that Basic Civil 3D classes do not teach styles creation.

So for you Lone Wolves out there, or for the folks who only got introduced to the basics and want to learn more… Read more

Demystifying Object Layers

What are object layers?  Why do my Express Tools (or Layer II tools) not work the way I expect?  When I pick a proposed alignment to freeze, all of my alignments disappear, even the existing ones? Why doesn’t matchprop work anymore? Why is Civil 3D treating me so poorly?? (followed by either cursing and a slamming phone, or tears and a trip to the shrink)

These are common questions from the new Civil 3D user… and often a point of frustration.

Here is an AutoCAD analogy that might help. Click here for more

Labeling your Structure to Structure Design

There are a few tricks for labeling your pipe lengths from structure to structure, but no really good ways to get that structure to structure slope and invert label to match your exact design intentions.

Here is something I came up with that still needs a little bit of babysitting, but isn’t too bad.
