GIS for Civil Engineers with Dana at the DE GIS Conference

I’ll be teaching a pre-conference workshop on Tuesday April 22, 2008 at the DE GIS Conference in Dover, DE. The Conference itself is on Wednesday, April 23, and is always a great program. I’ll be attending the conference as well. If you hustle up and register by April 4, the conference is only $90, and add $20 for the pre-conference workshops. I’d say that’s a STEAL, wouldn’t you?

I’ll be giving away two (2!) copies of Mastering AutoCAD Civil 3D 2008. So bring your business card!

GIS for Civil Engineers and Land Development Professionals in the CAD Environment (Dana Probert, Engineered Efficiency)
1:00pm – 4:00 pm

Consulting engineers, surveyors and landscape architects are often behind the learning curve when it comes to geospatial data. They hear about all of this publicly available information and don’t know how to integrate it into their projects, or perhaps they think they need special software. The truth is that most land development professionals have the capability to import and analyze terrain models, aerial imagery and GIS data with the software they already have and use every single day. This class will demystify geospatial data by explaining what it is, how to find it and how to get it into your AutoCAD drawings using the tools contained in Civil 3D, Map 3D and Land Desktop.

The agenda will include: Gathering data without leaving the office; Understanding GIS data and terminology; How to obtain aerial imagery and terrain information from Google Earth; How to download, import and theme soil data; How to use the Delaware DataMIL to gather data such as tax parcels, road centerlines and municipal boundaries and bring it into CAD; How to create a terrain model from a DEM file; Important techniques for working with aerial topographic data.

The class format will include lecture, detailed demonstrations, a step by step handout and plenty of time for questions and answers. While the instruction will demonstrate using Civil 3D 2008, most techniques will apply to all users of any of the following: Autodesk Map 3D, Land Desktop or Civil 3D. A few techniques, such as importing a terrain model from Google Earth and creating a terrain model from a DEM file will require Civil 3D 2008 or greater. If you are in doubt about whether the class applies to your software, please e-mail the instructor.
