Typically, you would expect to see an instant reaction when changing the profile view style vertical exaggeration.

Civil 3D 2008 has the capability to split your profile views, which is handy on sites with a large range of elevations.

However, when you made your split, you may or may not have noticed this warning in Profile View Properties:
This warning means: no matter what you do to the profile view style, nothing will change once a profile has entered this “split” mode.
Also, you may be set on “split mode” without realizing it. Below is the profile view properties dialog box of a profile view that appears normal, and that I had no intention of splitting. Frustration followed as I tried in vain to change the vertical exaggeration.
To avoid this situation by checking your command settings. You might be making split profile views each time without realizing it.
