I Love 2008 Labels

Since everyone else is writing about Civil 3D 2008 I might as well be a conformist and do the same. Ed: Watch it, or we’ll give you a permanent job.

How many of you out there (in 2007) have wanted to freeze station labels or structure labels, or even just change their colour (yes I did spell check…I’m Canadian remember)?  I’m sure you clicked about 72 times going into the component editor to see what layer the labels were on because the labels are a nested object within the alignment or structure.

Well NO MORE.  We put our collective feet down and Autodesk answered. See what I mean below!

List most any label now and you’ll get something interesting;
AECC_ALIGNMENT_STATION_LABEL_GROUP for station labels
AECC_STRUCTURE_LABEL for the structure label.

What does this mean?  Well, when you create your labels they go on their own layer and they are their own objects, not to be nested or confused with their respective objects.

Not good enough for you?  Ok.  See station 0+060 above?  Take a look below.

A CTRL+Click and a delete and it’s gone.  Try that in 2007.

Want to bring all them deleted labels back?  Right click and…

There you go.  I think this is my favorite feature of 2008.  From the standpoint of a user who knows drafting like nobody’s business, but may not know how to determine the layer of a nested object in Civil 3D, this will be a huge advantage.

    I’m really sorry, but I’m going to have to write you up for your spelling of “color” – there’s no “U” in it from where I sit (Mid-Mississippi, if you must know.) Two more demerits and you’ll have to clean out the back room (trust me, you don’t want to do that) AND buy the beer for the group….

    Seriously, good post. Keep up the good work!

    Okay, which language are we speaking here? Oh, yes, ENGLISH: comes from ENGLAND, where “colour” contains a U. Keep writing for the world, Matt, let the Americans deal with it. 🙂

    Nice post and thanks for bringing that to our attention.

    BUT, why are all you Civil 3D writers (permanent or otherwise) keeping us in the dark over the biggest topic in recent months – PIPES? Can we avid civil3d.com readers look forward to an update on the improvements there?

  3. Because it’s a monster subject, and to be honest, we’re buried. I’m sure someone will post something soon.

    Ah, fair enough. I guess we’ll have to be eagerly expectant patiently. Thanks, James.

    That’s why we all keep coming back here… to see what else these gurus keep up their sleeves. Great job guys. I too will be looking forward to info on pipes, but enjoying all your other 2008 postings in the interim.
